The best way the show conveys terror though is by excellent use of color and art together. Depictions of ghosts are plentiful, ranging from the type of Japanese folklore to far more insidious beings. Episodes also happen to delve into horror every so often which is where the artists were really able to shine. First, the art itself from episode to episode is always very well done, but that’s only the starting point. Yuko also begins as a rather vapid character, but she is revealed as a far more complex person than the rest.Įven if a lot of the content in Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is disappointing, the visuals stand out as being fantastic more often than not.
#Dusk maiden of amnesia series
They’re a cast of kids which would be right at home in a comedy series which is a shame since the anime does deal with some rather unsavory plot points. The rest of the cast stand primarily as archetypes we’re all familiar with. Of all the characters, only Yuko herself manages to have an ounce of novel personality. Viewers are finally shown what happened to Yuko and it really serves to make all the preceding episodes seem childish.Īnother unfortunate point of the show stems from its haremesque style. It just seems odd that the rest of the show couldn’t have maintained a more mature air given the subject matter revealed. The sudden shift in tone is really unexpected, although it is a welcome surprise. Strangely, after focusing so heavily on silly harem and slice of life-styled nonsense, it delves into some dark and emotional stuff near the end. Of course, the entire run of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia doesn’t follow this predictable path. The girls get jealous of each other and can’t help but go gaga over this guy who doesn’t seem to have much going for him. Even though there is a ghost and hauntings occurring, it spends a great deal of time playing out like any other harem series. This might be the first point where the show really starts to splinter from its main plot point.

Two other students join and both have the hots for our intrepid Teiichi. She even forces Teiichi to start up a paranormal investigations club to aid in this pursuit of knowledge. But doesn’t Yuko herself know what happened? No, and as such she enlists Teiichi to her cause to unravel the secrets surrounding her own death. Yuko is a well-known ghost around campus and students regularly spread rumors about how she might have come to haunt the run-down old school. There, he comes face to face with a ghost haunting the area. High school student Teiichi was exploring an old, empty wing of his school after feeling a strange pull to explore it. The overarching plot in Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is seriously interesting. But does it manage this over its twelve episode run? As it turns out, the show is a pretty mixed bag. Featuring a story about a ghost who must unravel the secrets of her own death, it certainly has the capacity to be a creepy tale. That’s why anime adaptation of the Dusk Maiden of Amnesia manga is so promising. If there’s one thing that the anime genre needs more of it is more shows about horror.
